Patrick H. Jones begins each painting with observational drawings gathered from both lived and deliberately sought-out experience. These fragments are spliced, repeated and collaged, their context shifted to generate new and often ambiguous narratives. Jones embraces this instability: how imagery can become familiar, confusing, satirical or revealing depending on how it is assembled and read. Titles serve as clues rather than explanations, and he values the plurality of readings that viewers bring to the work.
In his recent works, Jones takes fatherhood as his point of departure. Lush, floral patterns radiate joy and exuberance, and within them demons and jesters are concealed and stacked, each poised to tip into the other. Anxiety and possibility emerge as near-identical states, distinguished only by the thoughts we attach to them. Across the works, Jones considers the daily choreography of early parenthood, the low hum of dread fed by the news cycle and doom scroll, and the strange recognition of his own childhood receding as he watches his child’s begin. The paintings sit between the two possibilities: whether they read as hopeful or foreboding depends on where the eye settles, and Jones leaves that choice to the viewer.
